Jon Merrill and Luke Moffat were early commits to the US NTDP and University of Michigan, but is that where they will play?
What's all the buzz about all of these 92's committing to NCAA Programs before they ever play 1 game of Junior Hockey. I will tell you why, Major Jr. A. There is stiff competition between the CHL and NCAA to get the best players out of each age groups talent pool of players. The CHL has already conducted their Bantam Draft in the WHL and the OHL is set to Draft 92's this Spring, so the NCAA Programs feel that the CHL has a head start on marketing their programs and what they can offer a prospective top prospect. Luke Moffat who currently plays for the Compuware U-16 Team is 15 years old, is set to play for the US NTDP in Ann Arbor next season and upon graduating from the US NTDP will enroll at the University of Michigan the fall of 2010 on an athletic scholarship to play hockey, not bad eh? But if you ask Luke, his real dream or goal is to play in the NHL. So he can sit back and let the bidding begin, will he continue on his current plan or opt to the WHL? only time will tell. "Good players have options" stated Elite Prospects President Don Harkins "I assume that risk all of the time as a GM in the USHL" added Harkins. "We all want top end kids who have the ability to play at the next level (NHL) as we feel that these types of difference makers will make our programs better, but we all realize that we may draft them and never see these players in our programs". "I think that is why the NCAA Programs are getting involved with prospects at earlier ages" added Harkins. "We took a flyer in drafting Pat Kane in the 6th round of the 2004 OHL Draft, we knew he was going to the US NTDP and a top prospect for the NCAA" said Mark Hunter (GM London Knights) "We were fortunate that Pat chose our program over Michigan and Boston Uinversity, it is obvious the impact he had on our program in London" added Hunter.
